Frequently Asked Questions

Are you really the asshole you appear to be on Whisker Wars?

Goodness no!  Well, maybe a little ;-) . If you’re taking it seriously (this goes for competing in beard competitions, as well), you’re doing it wrong.  Everyone chosen for the cast of Whisker Wars doesn’t like me, so I’m sure it was just a matter of convenience to cast and edit me as the villain, and I play it up on camera.  I hope we have an opportunity to meet without cameras around so you can learn some of the reality behind the reality show.

How long have you been growing your beard?

I started growing the beard I have now in Late May/Early June of 2003.  We’re well past the seven year beard itch at this point.  The length you typically see it at takes about 4.5-5 years to get to.  Just like you or someone you know might get their hair cut, I keep my beard trimmed.

Will you ever shave?

In my book, I stress the importance of keeping your style fresh by changing your facial hairstyle, so I’m open to the idea of shaving some day.  That being said, I’ve forged a career from my beard, and every single day it brings fun and adventure into my life.  You’re undoubtedly here because of my beard.

For the sake of discussion, let’s put the bounty on my golden fleece at $1 million.  Hereafter it shall be known as The Million Dollar Shave™.

How did you get started competing in beard competitions?

In 2003, I learned of the World Beard and Moustache Championships when they came to the United States.  The contest was held in Carson City, Nevada, a reasonable five hour drive from Santa Cruz, CA where I was living.   However, my beard was a baby, and I chickened out at the last minute.  I vowed to go to the next one.  The next one was in 2005 in Berlin, and I almost chickened out again.  I went, and I won 3rd place in Natural Full Beard.  The rest is history.

How can I get started competing in beard competitions?

Begin by growing a great facial hair style.  The competitions are much less about beard length than they are about beard quality, and your overall appearance as it is enhanced by your beard.  Join Beard Team USA.  Their website lists a lot of upcoming competitions and will help you find a local chapter.  Compete every chance you get; it’s fun and it will help you improve.

What is your day job?

This is my day job.

Technically, I would say I’m an author in that I’m a writer who makes his living off of a book and who prefers to work within the idea/focus/length/format of a book.  Since the competitions don’t pay, my main gig is The Facial Hair Handbook, with related speaking engagements about beards and their significance to men and to society.  The publishing world is changing not unlike the music world changed; this time I’m equipped to ride the wave instead of get battered against a reef by it.  Expect more books from me in the future.

Where can I hear your music?

I quit and renounced music.  I don’t even listen to it in my car.  I’m not playing with anyone, and I may never release my solo album.

Where can I get your books?

Amazon and Barnes and Noble are the most popular online stores, but you can also order from an independent bookstore with IndieboundPowell’s always has the book in stock too.

If your local bookstore doesn’t have The Facial Hair Handbook in stock, they can order it for you easily.  It’s available in many public and university libraries, as well.  If it’s not in yours, ask your librarian to order it.  It’s easy.  So easy.

How can I book you at my event/college/bookstore/bedroom?

Just email me and we’ll take it from there.
